An ongoing mixed media project
Having spent most of their adult life as a migrant, with no strong ties to their country of birth, Andie Riekstina has long been interested in the concept of "home" as an extension of identity. By posing a simple question "What does home mean to you?" they seek to uncover shared patterns and explore the space where external, physical, and internal, mental, worlds intersect. This project employs an experimental analog photography technique, giving varied and unpredictable results shaped by subtle shifts in the shooting and development process. These variations emphasise the fragility of assumed safe spaces, inviting viewers to reflect on the interplay between a place - as a mental and as a physical concept - and ones identity.

Greyscale
Large format experimental photography author technique project, 2021 - 2024
It began as a darkroom study during the extended covid lockdowns when author spent hours on end in complete darkness to find the right development and exposure times and chemicals to achieve the partial solarisation appearance they were looking for.
The aim of this project was to give the subjects an otherworldly eerie presence that is subtle but immersive. What began as a curiosity driven research has grown into an obsession with building a new reality that lets the viewer see beyond the slightly classical portrait arrangement and into the, sometimes unpredictable, new layer where darkness of the eyes, shadows of cheekbones and fingers or other details have taken on a life of their own as if showing a timeless side of existence where everything and nothing happens at once.
